The Subtropical Garden at Landsendt - a plant collector's dream by Dick Endt $55
This wonderful new book covers the 48-year history of Landsendt, a 20-acre West Auckland property at Oratia which started with dairy farming, and developed with tree tomatoes, kiwifruit, passion fruit, macadamias, babacos, bananas and taro leaves. It has eventually evolved into a superb subtropical botanical garden.
Dick and his wife Annemarie realised they were living in their own subtropical microclimate and they made several visits to South America collecting plants and seeds. The Andes was a rich source of plant material, and their most notable success was the introduction of the babaco from Ecuador, which then lead to the introduction of many different species, especially palms.
The book is well-written and the photography is superb. It concludes with a photographic tour of the Landsendt Garden as it is today, and of some of the interesting plants growing there. A fascinating book about the achievements of a major figure in the New Zealand gardening and horticultural world.
The book was designed by AM Proofreading and Editing - Adrienne Morris (Auckland member of NZSA) completed the whole job in-house, from editing, typesetting, total design layout, photo retouching, cover designs and proofreading - all stages right up to proofing by the printer.
