GOLDEN BAY LIVE POETS PRESENT IAN WEDDE
Welcome to cold and sunny June – and to warm evenings around the fire at the Mussel Inn poetry nights! Poetry slam champion Roger Lusby will be coming over from Nelson to MC this month’s Live Poets on Thursday 22 June from 7.30 pm. The special guest is nationally renowned Ian Wedde, and we will also be joined by ‘witch rock’ violinist Alice Williams.
Ian Wedde is a former New Zealand Poet Laureate (2011-13) and 2014 winner of the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement (poetry). Poet, novelist and curator, he’s published sixteen poetry collections, seven novels and various art catalogues and monographs. Fellow poet and critic Harry Ricketts says Wedde’s work ‘is a bit like taking the pulse of New Zealand.’ Last month Wedde’s Selected Poems was published by Auckland University Press.
Alice Williams is a one-woman band who has toured with The Eastern, Ravens and Miles and The Rumours. She will open the evening with ‘whisperings of witch rock’, weaving vocals with haunting melodies and chordal creations echoing folky roots, gypsy jazz and blues.
The Live Poets evening opens and closes with an open mic session – everyone is welcome to attend or participate. Open mic poets and singers can register on the night, or pre-register by emailing Rose at email@example.com. Koha entry.
