It may seem that once a manuscript is finished the hard work is done. However, the next, very important step, is equally as important - finding the right publisher. Below is information to help writers in this process, including links to New Zealand publishers and other organisations.

Manuscript Assessors and Editors

Assessors provide a close reading of the text and a detailed report covering the strengths and weaknesses of the work. This includes plot, structure, characterisation, point-of-view, language and style. An assessment gives the author pointers on how to revise the text to make it more publishable. While an assessor may make suggestions, they do not generally market work to publishers. Editors fine-tune a manuscript once it is ready to go to the publisher. They cover spelling, grammar, usage, fact checking and style such as length of sentences.

Literary Agents

Literary agents represent your work to publishers. They generally work with completed manuscripts which are marketable. Bona fide agents do not charge fees for their work but have a contract which provides for a percentage of the author’s commission on sales. If you have any concerns over an agent, contact the NZSA office. The NZSA recommends using members of the NZALA.

Publishing Consultants

Consultants offer various services ranging from editing and ghostwriting to the publication of manuscripts.

Magazines, Journals & Ezines

There are many ways to publish short fiction, poetry or essays. We offer a list of publications - literary magazines as well as electronic formats.

Publishers

Most publishers specialise in certain kinds of publications. By visiting their websites, you can obtain some idea of whether your manuscript will suit a potential publisher.

Electronic Publishing

The world of electronic or digital publishing is growing. It is possible to 'publish' your work online and have it available to a worldwide audience.

Distributors

Publishers contract distributors to market their authors’ books throughout New Zealand. Some distributors will accept selected self-published books which have general appeal and commercial potential for distribution through their networks. Books submitted must meet quality standards for content and production values before they will accept them for distribution. Email queries to the distributor first to determine if they distribute books of the genre you write in.
