Open only to financial members of the NZSA, the programme, sponsored by Creative New Zealand, was set up to give beginning writers who demonstrate potential and commitment the opportunity to work closely with an experienced writer as their mentor.
Applicants are expected to have some publishing record - a few stories or non-fiction articles for instance, or to have attended creative writing courses so they are aware of the basics of writing. They should also have a substantial work in progress in any literary genre. The application requires a synopsis of the proposed project plus a sample of the work-in-progress.
Mentors are available for a maximum of 20 hours over a one-year period to discuss ideas and problems, provide practical and editorial advice and share the benefit of their experience as published writers. We have compiled a register of mentors which includes some of New Zealand's most experienced writers, editors and creative writing tutors.Mentoring takes place either face-to-face, by telephone, fax, email or a combination of these.
Applications are assessed by a committee of three experienced writers skilled in manuscript assessment.
Applications will be called for in December and close in March the following year.
