Central Districts Branch
Central Districts Branch has a membership spread across a wide geographical region – from Gisborne to Wairarapa, Napier to New Plymouth, Otaki to Taumaranui, and – from May 2015 – stretching north into the Bay of Plenty. At August 2015, there were some 145 members in the expanded branch.
With significant urban centres throughout the region there is no single centre for Central Districts Branch activities. Events often happen within each location, and some members also play a large part in their wider local literary and arts scene. An important annual event in the Branch is our Short Story Competition. With open (adult) and student sections, the competition is open to all residents of the Central Districts catchment area. This year’s competition (2015) opened in August and closes 2 October.
Because we are so widely spread we meet officially as a Branch just four times a year: generally in March (the AGM), June, September and November/December (Christmas). Meetings are held in different centres around the region. Meetings are usually held on Sundays from 11am to 1.30 with a byo lunch, and occasionally feature a guest speaker or are linked to other events such as a local arts festival. Attendance tends to reflect the challenging geographical spread of the Branch region. Smaller, local groups also get together within the region. These tend not to run to a pre-ordained schedule but are called as issues – or simply the desire to touch base with other writers – arise.
