After a lifetime of scribbling (including dozens of theatre reviews for the Press and Listener), this century I got serious - often in a whimsical sort of way. I was captured for ten years by stuff that happened 120 years ago at a  billabong in the NT of Australia (see 'After Andrew', etc) and a series of travel stories (for the Listener, NZ Today, AA Directions). This year I've completed a short novel that's been marinating for 40 years. Now I'm well into a novel based on the lives of my grandparents who met in an English hospital after Gallipoli - it's probably called 'The Hard Life of Ted Fitz'.

After Andrew - Adelaide to Kakadu and Darwin on the trail of an 1899 bush cyclist and missionary

A biography/history/travel book describing my trip across Australia on the trail of my grandfather, with excerpts from his diaries. (2010)

Film and Fiction - Studies of New Zealand Fiction and Film Adaptation (Longman Paul, 1985)

A resource for senior English classes in the days when there were many films based on NZ short stories and novels, but few resources. We reproduced many of the short stories, including A Glorious Morning, Comrade (Gee) and Old Man's Story (Sargeson).

A series of research papers related to Kapalga billabong in Kakadu National Park (NT Australia).

Following the publication of 'After Andrew' I published my grandfather's memoir - ' Adventures of a Pioneer Mission Among the Aborigenes in North West and North Australia (1958). In 2009 I received a NT Government grant to research the uses of the land where Andrew ran his mission - 'Gabarlgu Kaparlgoo Kapalga – the story of a Kakadu billabong'. The indigenous family who have title to the land invited me to research and write their family's story - 'Way-Iji - The Minitja People of Kapalga'.

And the Juice of a Lemon (ebook, 2018)

A short novel about incomplete lives and whole stories. 'And the Juice of a Lemon' weaves together the story of a contract writer and the manuscript of young adult novel he has been hired to finish. The action moves from Auckland to Dunedin and down the coast to Brighton River and finally Taieri Mouth, with passages from the manuscript injected into the narrative.
