Nelson Live Poets next meeting on Wednesday 18 October features guest poet Elizabeth Smither.

Elizabeth Smither has written five novels, five collections of short stories and eighteen poetry collections. She was the first woman Te Mata Estate Poet Laureate, winning the New Zealand Book Award for Poetry in 1990 and the Montana New Zealand Book Award for Poetry in 2000.  In 2004 she was awarded an honorary DLit from the University of Auckland for her contribution to literature and was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. She was given the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in 2008. In 2016 she won the Sarah Broom Poetry Prize, New Zealand’s most valuable poetry award.

The evening starts at 6.45 pm with music from local poet and musician Hone Simpson. The first Open Mic session is at 7 pm, and after a break Elizabeth Smith appears at 7.45 pm. Following another break, the second Open Mic session starts at 8.30 pm. Note change of venue: The Wakatu Hotel, corner of Collingwood & Bridge Streets, Nelson (opposite The Royal).

Poets (and musicians) can register on the night – write your name on the whiteboard on arrival. Entry by koha at the door. Drinks and snacks are available from the bar.
