The 2024 edition of Turbine | Kapohau available now

This year’s issue of Turbine I Kapohau, the annual online literary journal of the International Institute of Modern Letters (IIML)—Te Pūtahi Tuhi Auaha o te Ao, is now live.

The journal showcases new fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry from the 2024 Master of Arts (MA) in Creative Writing workshops at the IIML, as well as brilliant work from emerging and established writers across Aotearoa.

You can view the journal at: turbinekapohau.org.nz

The journal features work by 2024 Adam Foundation Prize winner Gilbert Ostini, and 2024 Biggs Family Prize in Poetry winner Tess Ritchie, as well as work by the current Poet Laureate Chris Tse, former Laureate David Eggleton, 2024 Sappho Prize winner Rebecca Hawkes, and a host of promising newcomers.

In a rich and wide-ranging interview, 2024 Te Herenga Waka―Victoria University of New Zealand Writer in Residence Ingrid Horrocks talks about Nine Lives, the collection of interlinked stories on pivotal moments in women’s lives that she has just completed, and her new project, Seeds, a novel set around 2030 that features one of the characters from Nine Lives. Ingrid also talks about the benefits of spending a year at the IIML: “It’s really valuable to have people around who understand what it is to make creative work.”

With submissions from more than 200 writers, this year’s Turbine | Kapohau editors had their work cut out for them. Ultimately, they chose pieces that got their attention or stayed with them long after reading.

Senior lecturer Chris Price says, “In these fractious days, more than ever we need gathering places like this where a wide variety of writers from Aotearoa can come together and raise their voices in chorus. Turbine | Kapohau performs the always essential service of allowing us to recognise and celebrate both our differences and our similarities.”

Readers can also hear five of the poets from this issue perform their work in a series of recordings.

This edition of Turbine | Kapohau was co-edited by 2024 MA workshop members Frances Chin, Jemma Richardson, and Tess Ritchie.
