THE 2016 TAKAH? SHORT STORY COMPETITION

Anna Rogers has spent most of her working life as a book editor, since 1984 as a freelancer. She has an MA in English from Canterbury University, and has also been both a bookseller and a sub-editor for The Listener. She works for most of the major New Zealand publishers, editing both fiction and non-fiction. Anna also adapts books for radio and is regular book reviewer. She gives occasional talks about editing and does an annual workshop and end-of-year judging for the Hagley Writers’ Institute. Anna has edited an anthology of writing about Christchurch and is the author of eight non-fiction books, including While You’re Away: New Zealand Nurses at War 1899–1948, A Lucky Landing: The Story of the Irish in New Zealand and illustrated histories of Canterbury and the West Coast.

Conditions of Entry:

  1. Each entry must be the original work of the person submitting it; entries must not have been previously published, or broadcast,and must not be submitted elsewhere for any competition, or for publication in any form, until after the announcement of the results of this competition.
  2. Each story submitted must be between 1500 and 2000 words. Please enter the word count with your story title on the entry form. Stories not within the word count will be disqualified.
  3. Entrants may submit as many previously unpublished stories as they wish, but each must be named separately on the entry form. Entry forms may be downloaded as either a pdf (click here) or .doc file (click here). Please use one entry form for all your stories.
  4. Entries will be accepted by post only – no email entries.
  5. Each story must be accompanied by a NZ$10 entry fee. For advice on payment, overseas entrants are asked to email admin@takahe.org.nz.
  6. The entrant’s name or nom de plume must not appear anywhere on the manuscript.
  7. All entries should be typed on one side of A4 paper, either 1.5 or double spaced.
  8. The judge’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. Any entrant making contact with the judge will be disqualified.
  9. The results and judge’s comments will be published on our website, and in the August issue of takah? magazine. Only those placed will receive individual notification.
  10. In the event of the competition being cancelled, all monies will be refunded.
  11. NB: Please keep a copy of your story, as entries will not be returned.
