The Academy of New Zealand Literature site is a rich source of long-form interviews, features, extracts, essays and conversations about contemporary New Zealand fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction. Long book reviews run on Wednesdays and Fridays, with short versions of many also appearing in Canvas magazine (NZ Herald).

Awa Wahine is an online magazine featuring think pieces, personal essays, and creative writing. Brief
Brief is an independent print journal that has been going since 1995. It appears biannually and publishes poetry, prose, essays… and things which are difficult to categorise. We are always looking for interesting, experimental, adventurous, or challenging new writing, from both established and emerging writers.
Circular is an online journal publishing genre-bending short fiction, poetry and personal essays. We specialise in works that may be classed as unusual and eclectic. circular is currently open for submissions from both emerging and established writers.

Headland
Headland is a quarterly e-publication, featuring the best short stories and creative non-fiction from New Zealand and around the world. We offer aspiring writers a platform for publication alongside more established authors, and award an annual cash prize for the best story published.

JAAM
JAAM has since grown into a popular national literary journal and receives funding from Creative NZ/Toi Aotearoa. Kotare: NZ Notes and Queries
Kotare is devoted to NZ literature, literary history, and literary criticism. It particularly welcomes submissions that have some basis in archival research and scholarship and criticism arising from newly discovered sources.
Landfall
NZ Fiction, verse, critical work, commentaries, reviews and essays.
As well as the reviews included in the two print issues each year, Landfall publishes additional review pages online, each month featuring six to eight reviews. An archive of all previous online reviews is a feature of the site. Typically the reviews are substantial and are commissioned from a mix of leading and emerging writers.

Redraft Press
Re-Draft is a nationally acclaimed collection of teenagers’ writing, published each year by Clerestory Press. Any New Zealand teenager can enter work using the form found in the back of the current edition of Re-Draft. Entries can be any creative writing genre and will be judged by award winning New Zealand writers.
Signals
Since 2012, the Young Writers Programme of the Michael King Writers Centre has published an annual literary journal showcasing a selection of work students have produced during the year. These pieces may be poetry, prose, comic-art or journalistic writing. (This publication is on hold in 2020 due to Covid-19.)

Sport

Established in 2001, this is an online literary journal published annually by the International Institute of Modern Letters (IIML) at Victoria University of Wellington. It presents new work by creative writing students alongside poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction by emerging and established writers.
