Today, Copyright Licensing New Zealand announces that it has changed its name to Tāwhia Copyright Aotearoa (TCA), marking a significant milestone in the organisation’s evolution.
The new name reflects a renewed commitment to supporting creators, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring copyright continues to serve the interests of Aotearoa New Zealand’s authors, artists and publishers in a rapidly changing environment.
The transition coincides with the week of Matariki, a time that honours reflection, renewal and the promise of new beginnings.
Sam Irvine TCA Chief Executive, said the timing of the change was intentional. “Matariki is a moment to reflect on where we have come from, to celebrate who we are, and to look ahead with purpose.
This name change symbolises our commitment to the future, to strengthening the value of copyright and ensuring it continues to support creativity and knowledge in Aotearoa New Zealand.”
The name “Tāwhia” (pronounced Taa-fee-ah) means to hold firmly and not allow something to merely slip away” (ka pūpuri, kāore e tuku kia rere, kia makere atu rānei). This reflects TCA’s role in connecting creators and users and enabling the lawful sharing of content in ways that recognise and reward creative effort.
While the name has changed, the organisation’s core purpose remains the same; To support New Zealand’s creative sector by facilitating access to copyright works and ensuring creators are fairly compensated for the use of their work.
Tāwhia Copyright Aotearoa will continue to work closely with educators, businesses, government agencies, and the creative community to promote understanding of copyright and to develop practical solutions for a digital world. “This is more than a name change. It is a reflection of who we are and who we serve, grounded in Aotearoa New Zealand, connected to our communities, and focused on the future.”
As Aotearoa New Zealand celebrates Matariki, Tāwhia Copyright Aotearoa looks ahead to a new chapter; one built on partnership, innovation, and a shared commitment to supporting creativity.
