In Conversation – Geoff Chapple and Warwick Freeman

In September 2014 Geoff Chapple and Warwick Freeman met somewhat by chance in a Devonport café. Warwick was then curating an exhibition on contemporary New Zealand jewellery for the Auckland Art Gallery.

Geoff was working on a book ‘Terrain – Travels through a Deep Landscape.’  They discovered a shared interest in New Zealand’s rocks: Warwick had pioneered the use of natural materials for more authentic New Zealand jewellery, and Geoff had pioneered the long trail Te Araroa, and was curious about the origins of the landscapes en route.

Soon after that first meeting they walked together across Auckland discussing the cultural use of stone, the scoria jewellery Warwick has displayed in the Auckland Museum, and the forces that produced the city’s immense lodes of volcanic rock.

The two men come from two ends of the same stony spectrum – small and exquisite, large and epic. They’ll continue their conversation on rocks, the forces that produce them and their effect on culture today.
