Inaugural takah? Essay Competition

First Prize: $250

Writers are invited to submit essays, standalone reviews, or works of creative non-fiction with a clear point of view on any topic relating to arts and / or culture in Aotearoa New Zealand or the broader Pacific.

Our Inaugural Essay competition will be judged by

Entries to be postmarked no later than 15 February 2017.

No email entries, please.

Results will be published online in April 2017.

The winning essay will be published in our online issue (takah? 90) in August 2017.

All entries will considered for publication.

Conditions of Entry:

  1. Each entry must be the original work of the person submitting it; entries must not have been broadcast or previously published in any form (including webzines or personal blogs), and must not be submitted elsewhere for any competition or for publication in any form until after 1 September
  2. Essays should be between 1500 and 3000 words. Please enter the word count with your essay title on the entry form. Essays exceeding the word count will be disqualified.
  3. Entrants may submit as many previously unpublished essays as they wish, but each must be named separately on the entry form. Please use ONE entry form for all your essays.
  4. All entries should be typed on one side of A4 paper, with pages numbered. NB: keep a copy of your essay(s) as entries will not be returned.
  5. Each individual essay must be accompanied by a NZ$10 entry fee. Overseas entrants are asked to email admin@takahe.org.nz for advice on payment.
  6. The entrant’s name or nom de plume must not appear on the manuscript.
  7. Worldwide copyright of entries will remain with the author, but all entries received will be considered for publication in takah? magazine, in print and / or online.
  8. The judge’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. Any entrant breaching this condition will be disqualified.
  9. The results and judge’s comments will be published in the April 2017 issue of the magazine (takah? 89), and on our website: http://www.takahe.org.nz. Only those placed will receive individual notification of the results.
  10. In the event of the competition being cancelled, all monies will be refunded.
