Applications are now open (20 July 2018 – 20 August 2018) for the 2019 University Bookshop Otago Summer Writer in Residence in association with Robert Lord Writers’ Cottage Trust – can you help spread the word?
The 2019 residency runs 07 January 2019 – 16 February 2019, and provides an emerging writer with 6 weeks accommodation at the Robert Lord Writers’ Cottage, a stipend, an office and admin base at the University Bookshop, and enrolment at the University of Otago 2019 Summer School which provides access to classes, opportunities to speak to classes and access to University libraries and resources.
Maria Samuela, the 2nd Summer Writer in Residence, says: “The residency gave me the rare opportunity to dedicate six weeks solely to my own writing. I worked on the next draft of a collection of stories I wrote for my MA folio the previous year. The timing was perfect, as was the location. It was my first time in Dunedin, and being in an unfamiliar city and having that physical distance from the settings of my stories—mainly Wellington—gave me the fresh perspective I needed to work on the next draft. The Robert Lord Cottage is a writer’s haven, and the University Book Shop, with its impressive literary history and central location, is ideal for external inspiration and avoiding any cabin fever.”
Hannah Bulloch, the inaugural Summer Writer in Residence in February 2017, is back in Dunedin over summer 2018/19, and staying at the Robert Lord Cottage while finishing up her book, that she worked on during her Residency.
