Call for Applications

The Wright-Murray Residency for Speculative Fiction Writers is once again seeking applications from New Zealand writers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Now in its second year, the residency, co-founded by award-winning author Lee Murray and philanthropist Chloe Wright ONZM, offers the winning writer a week’s accommodation at a country estate in the Bay of Plenty, $1000 stipend to cover expenses, and ten hours of mentorship or peer support to develop their writing project.

Christchurch author, Matt Norman, recipient of the inaugural award, writes: “I’m honoured to have had my work recognised by the Wright-Murray Residency. Many hours went into the first draft of my edgy young adult novel, Dark Days, and it means so much to me that the book I’m so passionate about also resonates with others. The mentorship helped to hone my skills and assist me in developing the work, and the award gave me the opportunity to write in a tranquil environment.” A requirement of the residency is that the writer also contribute to the local community. “I enjoyed a lovely hour at a high school, arranged on my behalf by the residency,” Matt says. “I was able to interact with the students. I was nervous, but the time flew by; I read a snippet of my writing and received valuable feedback from my target audience.”

Open to speculative writers of short stories, novels, and poetry, co-sponsor Lee Murray, says emerging writers are especially encouraged to apply. “Opportunities like this can be a huge boost to a writer’s career, not just in terms of confidence, but also offering practical, actionable support.”

Matt agrees: “I’m appreciative of the Wright-Murray Residency for offering recognition to New Zealand speculative fiction writers like me. I hope my experience serves as an inspiration to other writers; if my work can make a difference, so can yours.”

Applications for the residency are currently open. The award closes on 21 March, with winners announced by early April. Residency dates will be by arrangement with the organisers.
