Ruby Porter answers YOUR burning craft questions!

An NZSA Auckland Branch event
Friday 1 July, 6.15pm
Online Event

Note: Due to the ongoing spread of illnesses this winter (and low attendance at our in person meeting in May), we will be holding our July and August meetings online (we’ll be back to in person in spring!). This will be a live Zoom event (it will not be recorded). Current Auckland Branch members only will receive the zoom link the day before so book it in your calendar now!

Point-of-view, plot, character, dialogue, setting; whatever you are struggling with in your writing we have help for you! Award-winning author Ruby Porter will be joining us to answer YOUR craft questions this July!

Ruby Porter is a prose-writer, poet and artist. She tutors creative writing at the University of Auckland, and in high schools. Ruby was the winner of the Wallace Foundation Short Fiction Award in 2017, with her short story ‘A Word for Blue’, and the inaugural winner of the Michael Gifkins Prize in 2018, with her debut novel Attraction.

Email us your writing question before 27 June, and Ruby will be answering them at our July meeting. This is a great opportunity to learn about craft, solve your writing problems, and glean writing advice from an expert!

New Books: Anyone wishing to present a new book at the Friday meeting please notify the Auckland Branch by email before noon on Wednesday 29 June. You will be given a slot during the Zoom meeting.

NZSA Auckland Roadshow – 30 July: Lively, inclusive, stimulating, practical (AND in person!) the NZSA Roadshows offer something for writers across the spectrum. Sessions cover craft, publishing, marketing and much more! Book July 30 in your calendar for this full day event – more details out soon.

Here’s feedback from other regions: “It’s difficult to find just one highlight…It was lovely to connect with other writers.. aha! Actually there was a highlight, in Paula’s address when she made us all welcome and included us all in the writerly community, that was the highlight for me.”

Expertise Needed

The committee has received many requests to offer both in person and zoom for all meetings. Is there anyone who can take responsibility for hybrid meeting? This would require someone who has the equipment, data, and knowledge to Zoom the meeting from the Coffee Club. Email us if that’s you!
