Athol Parks

Athol is a Dunedin-based writer and tour guide. Formerly a sub-editor with The Southland Times Ltd., he has done freelance work and contributed the notes to five Book Discussion Scheme titles.

Athol's first book, Alert Level Four, is a self-published chronicle of life during New Zealand's initial 2020 lockdown. Two editions of the work were published in 2021 - and both sold out.

Athol's second book, Japanese Gardens, was published in May, 2022.

Alert Level Four

A work of creative non-fiction, Alert Level Four comprises 33 vignettes or stories that chronicle each day of New Zealand's initial 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.

Two editions of this book were published in 2021, by City Walks.

Japanese Gardens

This limited-edition hardcover book is a travelogue and a primer on gardens in Japan.

Twenty years ago, the author lived and worked in a traditional house and garden in Kyushu. That experience is recounted here, along with impressions formed on a recent visit to more-celebrated gardens in Kyoto and Kanazawa.

Colour photographs are a feature of this book, which was designed, printed and  bound in Dunedin.
