Writing is a wonderful way to create and express and explore. I’ve published eight academic books and over a dozen peer reviewed articles. But I find fiction funner, and freer. So, I’m focussing now on the fun and freedom of fiction. Fiction allows for the free play of imagination and the exploration of ideas. And I have a few of those.
I recently completed the Lucid series, American Dreamer, Tomorrow's History, and Gods and Dreamers published by Dreaming Big Publications. Lucid dreams, time travel, alternate realities, gods interfering … I now have several manuscripts in the desk: a science fiction novel involving stepping across space and some unsavory aliens. Or are they? Title: MisStep. In a sentence: "Interstellar drug deal gone south." I have written a novel length sequel, Seeders, and a standalone climate fiction novel, QMS. Those three are currently going through content edit process, or looking for a home (publishing house). Short stories and collection published include: Journey to the Stars, Science Fiction Stories from the Bottom of the Ocean to the Depths of Space, and On an Island Surrounded by Water (both published under my own label, Southern Skies Publications). Edited fiction includes an anthology of local writing, Kaituhi Rawhiti: A Celebration of East Coast Writers.
My current work in progress is a science fiction novel is a love story involving folding both time and space.
I was born and raised in Northern California. It was a fantastic place to grow up: the Sierra Nevadas were on the horizon; the American River Canyon was right below the house. Many a day, and sometimes nights, was spent down there. I was lucky to have parents who always questioned the party line. I also grew up with huge map of the world on my wall. When I got old enough, I checked myself out of high school, slaved away in some manual labour jobs (including on the railroad, but mostly digging trenches and hauling lumber around construction sites), and finally bought a backpack and travelled the Pacific. It was my first visit to where I now call home, 35 years in the past when my hair was half way down my back, and much thicker. I lived in the UK for almost 15 years, and my grown daughters are still there. Then Alaska … what an incredibly beautiful place! I had a favorite glacier, as you do. I got to watch bears and eagles, as well as a year in the total dark (or light) of the arctic. And (back) to New Zealand, now three passports in hand, in a way only those circles tend to happen in life.
