Gail Varga

New on the scene... I am a creative who has spent years under sail and recently settled permanently in New Zealand Aotearoa.  Whilst underway I have written three loosely linked literary novels: the dystopian After the Money Has Gone, set in the UK; Flow, the story of shifting racial and colonial power in a fictional French island territory in the South Pacific seen through the eyes of a slightly tipsy, bicycle-riding former starlet, and Wild Times with Granite, a tragicomic allegorical tale of a young woman naviagating the trauma of her times.  Additionally there is, My LIfe in Bikinis, a collection of South Pacific Sailing essays and thoughts, and A Shirt of Thread, which is a mountain romance set in Scotland.

I am now seeking an onward path for these works, and have begun by being the recent winner of the NZSA Northland Short Story competition with Pista's Hands. I trust that I am in the right place...

Brief Bio:

A creative type, born to an Eastern European émigré family swimming in the debris of a post-traumatic era, Gail Varga has sailed oceans, climbed mountains, pedalled across countries, lost blood, sweat and tears over notions of progress, failed, loved, dealt bluntly with necessity, been close by when death was visiting, and enjoys bountiful health and life.

She Loves:

Water, being on it, around it and especially in it.

Music, her old wonky piano, her violin with the gaffer tape on the back to stop it buzzing, some of the best concert halls of the world, strumming her ukulele.

A kind of monotony, endurance and physical tenacity that most people would consider the antithesis of luxury.

Luxury unbridled, often with gold leaf, but usually just adorned with naked nature.

Focussing.

Getting her hands dirty.

People.
