At the age of sixteen, Blake is parentless, in constant trouble with the law and in desperate need of a fresh start. Opportunity sails over the horizon in the form of The Mistress of the Oceans, aka Missy, the largest passenger liner in the world. Blake and his sister Leisha get jobs on board, hoping to forge new lives for themselves.
Things go well at first as they set out on a cruise across the South Pacific Ocean, apart from Blake’s gambling problem. Then it happens. Strange meteorites begin to fall from the sky, releasing a deadly gas. Nearly everyone on board Missy is killed.
Lucky to be alive, Blake and Leisha must work with the two other survivors on Missy to find out how to sail the massive ship and get themselves to safety – if such a thing still exists. They manage to navigate around the South Pacific but every port they visit seems to present more danger than safety.
In spite of the situation, or perhaps because of it, Blake grows in confidence and begins to discover capabilities and strengths that he barely knew he possessed.
