Gillian Candler

Gillian Candler's books have been finalists in the NZ Children's Book Awards and listed in the Storylines Notable Books Awards. "At the Beach" won the Elsie Locke Medal for non-fiction in the 2013 LIANZA Children's Book Awards.

Gillian is a former teacher and publisher turned author. She writes factual books for children which are inspired by her experiences volunteering in conservation projects and her adventures in wild places. She also writes about nature fo adult audiences.

Gillian enjoys working with children at events such as the festivals, library holiday programmes, school tours and visits, she also creates and runs writing workshops for children.

She has held various judging roles including the NZ Post Children's Book Awards in 2012, the CLNZ Education Publishing Awards in 2010-11, and the CLNZ Non-Fiction Writers' Awards in 2010-2017.

New Zealand Nature Heroes

Inspiration and actvities for young conservationists. New Zealand Nature Heroes is designed to inspire 8-14 year olds to take action for the environment. It includes biographies of inspirational nature heroes, past and present, young and old, as well as natural history information and authentic activities that young people can take part in or initiate.

Explore and Discover Nature

There are 6 titles in this series: At the Beach, In the Garden, Under the Ocean, In the Bush, From Moa to Dinosaurs, Up the River. Designed for 4-10 year olds, these books introduce a habitat and the animals and plants that live there.  From Moa to Dinosaurs covers the time periods before humans arrived in Aotearoa New Zealand. Illustrated by Ned Barraud.

At the Beach won the Elsie Locke Medal at the 2013 Lianza Awards. It was also a finalist in the New Zealand Book Awards for Children and Young Adults. Other books that were finailists in the latter awards were Under the Ocean and From Moa to Dinosaurs.

Whose Beak is This? and companions

There are three titles in this series: Whose Beak is This? Whose Feet are These? Whose Home is This? For 2-8 years old, these books take a fun guessing game approach to animal adaptations and habitats. Both Whose Beak is This? and Whose Home is This? were finalists in the New Zealand Book Awards for Young Children and Adults. Illustrated by Fraser Williamson.

Animals of Aotearoa

A compendium of animals both native and introduced for young children. This book accompanies the explore and discover series. Illustrated by Ned Barraud.

Mia & Leo Go Wild

A story for pres-schoolers and young readers about Mia & Leo's first overnight tramp. Along the way Mia & Leo encounter other trampers who need a bit of help. Read along and look for the wildlife in the illustrations by Gavin Mouldey. Created with the support of NZ Mountain Safety Council, safety tips are woven into the story.
