Gwendolyn Needham
Gwendolyn Needham has been self-publishing for 25 years! All her 5 books have been written in answer to the needs of those she has worked amongst. As one of the first New Zealand women ordained a priest (1979) in the Anglican church, she was faced at St. Paul’s, Kawakawa, with the the challenge of small children and their parents, usually mothers, looking enquiringly at her, upfront. Their eyes said “Goodness – it’s a woman vicar! She’s a mother, a farmer, a nurse – maybe she’ll talk on our terms, use our words, understand where we’re at, and help us bring up our families more successfully.....that’s what we want from going to church..”So Gwendolyn’s first book was born – “Foundations for Faith - Educating Families for the Future”. 1987 80p. Not a weighty tome at all, but spelling out into simple terms the basics of being a Christian. Photocopied at Northtec, Whangarei, and distributed into parishes, it was read by chance, at Kaitaia, by a visiting top theologian from England on a lecture tour. His verdict – “Congratulations, Gwendolyn.Your small book says everything that needs to be said, clearly and well. This book deserves a wide readership and will help many.” Within 2 years, back in England, he was elected The Archbishop of Canterbury, equal in rank as the Queen, in the eyes of the Anglican Church.- The Most Reverend George Carey. Back down on the farm, after 8 years, Gwendolyn moved sideways from being a parish vicar, into the world of business and community development. Majoring on how to use potential and find one’s own personal power, success, and happiness in life This challenge took her to work freelance in Auckland nursing circles for 5 years, while she experimented with teaching human development seminars for all comers. Written stuff was required!
