Trainsurfer

Trainsurfer is a coming-of-age historical fiction adventure, set in South Africa towards the end of the apartheid era. Jabu is an orphan who finds himself in challenging situations. He is lured into joining a gang of boys that surf on top of the trains in Soweto. After a terrible accident, Jabu runs. He flees his lonely shack and stows away in a truck, not realising it is transporting something alive and wild. He travels from Johannesburg to Durban on a quest to find his Auntie. He is searching for a sense of belonging and family but doesn't expect to make interracial friendships during a time when this was discouraged, or to forge deep bonds with Father's lost boys. The story was originally conceptualised as a screenplay, so there is cinematic-style action throughout - in and out of the ocean, like train surfing, surfing, encounters with antagonistic police and a shark attack. Friendships lead to betrayal, but ultimately there is forgiveness, reconciliation and hope.

Saving Thandi

After an accident that left Ice with a permanent disability, the last thing he needs is an adventure. The trouble is, the rhinos need saving, his friends are in danger, and he may be the caring hero they all need.

A furious storm, a clumsy gun-wielding monkey, a charging rhino, rogue waves and foolish courage will need to combine if Jabu and friends are to pull off a daring rhino rescue, an incredible kidnapping escape and save an animal orphanage from an impending shutdown. If they fail, more rhinos will be slaughtered for their horns, Alexia and Billie will be taken away on the Jewel of the Sea, and the organised crime network will be victorious. “Saving Thandi” is an exciting blend of adventure, mystery and action, with conservation at its heart. Well-loved characters from “Trainsurfer” and quirky animals take on evil villains in a story that highlights the plight of rhinos in Africa.

Nikau's Escape

In volcanic terrain, legendary mountain warriors battled for a beautiful bride. It is here, that Jabu finds himself thrust into another adventure. He is equally beguiled by Pania and Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud. Snowboarding on a mountain sounds exciting, but he doesn’t expect to be near the top when Ruapehu erupts.
Further down the volcano …
Faced with a wall of snow, Nikau digs like a dog on a beach, but he can’t find his sister. The avalanche has swallowed her. “Give her back!” he roars at the mountain, but it remains unmoved. Rock bombs sear through the sky, propelled by jets of ash and he knows he must flee. Pania would want that. He snowboards away, escaping the eruption and a roiling lahar, to seek shelter. Deep in the indigenous woodland, he finally learns his family’s secrets. He will need to face off with his ex-jailbird father and grapple with the truth behind his parents’ divorce. Survival and loyalty are at stake.
This coming-of-age Young Adult adventure is a celebration of the captivating land of Aotearoa. There is a glossary of terms with Te Reo, Zulu and other words that need explanation.
The final instalment in the Adventures of Jabu & Friends.

Call Me Madeleine

Betrayed by those she trusted, banished to a small town. Can a childhood friend help her find hope in a burning world?

Madeleine's climate change activism has her at loggerheads with her widowed Grandpa. The world's weather is extreme, and she fears we may be past the tipping point. Maddy's petrolhead boyfriend, Liam, doesn't see things her way, and her best friend, Mia, has a secret crush on him.

After an act of defiance, Maddy's parents send her to spend the holidays apart from Liam, with Grandpa, in small-town New Zealand. He lives in an isolated villa on MacTaggart Hill. She begins to understand Grandpa's generation when she reads his manuscript, but their relationship is erratic. On a lonely horse ride, she meets a childhood friend, Christopher, who is on a mission to save the local wetland from development. He may be the friend she needs when the village experiences a series of devastating climate-related events and her relationships are falling apart. But can she depend on him?

A Young Adult, Cli-Fi with family drama and a romantic subplot, by the author of Trainsurfer, Saving Thandi and Nikau's Escape. The story is threaded through with Christian themes.
