Ken Gorbey

Ken draws on his experiences in the museum and cultural industry to write a memoir entitled Te Papa to Berlin : the making of two museums. This is to be published this year by Otago University Press. A childhood in rural Waikato brought an exposure to Māori culture; Te Papa is 13 years of his life from the earliest concepts to a spectacular opening. Suddenly he is transported into that centre of world history that is Berlin to recover a museum, the Jewish Museum Berlin, threatened with failure. These experiences offer an opportunity to look back at the growing maturity of New Zealand culture and consider other vastly different cultural circumstances, such as the seeming limitless territory east of Berlin that is Russia. All the time he confronts the horror that is the Holocaust and devastation of the 2nd World War.
