Kris Herbert

Kris Herbert is a children’s author based in Ōhinehau Lyttelton. Kris spent two decades as a magazine journalist and copywriter. She is motivated to write picture books by the magical moment of bedtime stories, or what she refers to as the snuggly bridge between frazzled parenting and the heart-swelling perfection of a sleeping child. “What a privilege – and responsibility – to be part of that transition, hopefully in a way that is a delightful experience for both the parent and the child. In my experience, the best children’s books also become part of a family’s identity and lexicon. This is what I am striving for.”

    Saving Wānanga

Published in 2024 by Potton & Burton

The true story of Wānanga, a kea from Arthur’s Pass that was poisoned by lead. Taken to an animal hospital in Christchurch, he recovered after treatment and happily returned to his home in the mountains. Kea are the world’s only alpine parrot, highly intelligent and famous for their cheeky, often naughty behaviour. They are, however, endangered, and while predators are the main reason for this, they are also very vulnerable to lead poisoning from lead-head nails on iron roofs. Beautifully illustrated, this conservation story with a ‘happy ending’ will appeal to children, ages 5 – 10.
