Lawrence Patchett

I'm a writer and IPED Accredited Editor. As an editor I specialise in fiction (novels and short stories) and non-fiction (special interests in history, sport, and health). As an IPED Accredited Editor and a member of the NZ Association of Manuscript Assessors, I meet industry standards and codes of conduct, and I update my skills regularly.

Previous projects include structural and copy-editing books of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for leading publishers, and co-editing the art and literary journal Hue and Cry Press, along with many proof-reading assignments. I also have experience as a fiction mentor, supervisor, and examiner for Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington and Hagley Writers' Institute.

My writing experience includes three books of fiction published by Te Herenga Waka University Press. These include Have this Heart (forthcoming in May 2026) and I Got His Blood On Me, winner of the NZSA Hubert Church Award for Best First Book of Fiction. Other awards include the CNZ Todd New Writers Award. My short fiction has also appeared in Landfall, Sport, Overland, The Long and the Short of It, and on RNZ. Author Photo: Janneth Gil.
