Lisette de Jong
Lisette is an editor who has worked with both fiction and non-fiction writers. She has also been teaching Scriptwriting for both stage and screen (10 minute scripts), and Project Management, for NorthTec’s Creative & Applied Writing programmes since 2020.
BACKGROUND
Lisette has a background in acting, comedy sketch writing and short fiction. She has learned the craft of scriptwriting, which has sharpened her understanding of constructs of story like motivations, conflict, characterisation, dialogue, subtext and plot.
FICTION EDITING
As an editor, she covers Line Editing, which improves the writing, together with Substantive Editing, where she also notes any issues with the story. My work helps the author produce a narrative that flows smoothly, with good sentence structure, pace and plot development. She ensures the story is clear for the reader, has continuity and believability, and is engaging.
Books she’s edited include the young adult paranormal Immersed series by Francesca Riley, and J.L. Williams’ junior fiction novels Holding the Horse and Like the Wind (Storylines Notable Book Awards winners) as well as her latest haunted house series.
NON-FICTION
For non-fiction works, it’s important to have well-written sentences, good structure and pace. Lisette can help you trim excess words or suggest where more information may be needed to help you produce a compelling book.
CREATIVE WRITING
Creative writing successes include published short stories, award-winning short plays and web series. Her plays that appeared in the Auckland Short + Sweet Festivals, garnering 7 awards are:
One Day in ISIS (winner Best Script, Best NZ Script, Best Director (Lisette) and People’s Choice), We Mean You No Harm Yet (winner Short +Sweet Festival Award), My Sad Genie (finalist People’s Choice Award), The Rock and This Could be the Start.
