Maria Artho
Maria has spent a lifetime hanging out with kids—helping, supporting, and learning from them—including a stint as a teacher aide working alongside students with special education needs. In recent years, her creative side has been busy crafting her NZ IN A BOX® memory card games, which make learning fun for all ages, as well as writing picture books for children.
In 2025, NZ IN A BOX® was handed over to a new owner who shares Maria’s passion and continues to support the KidsCan charity, which is dear to her heart. This transition allowed her to devote her energy to new writing projects.
These days, Maria lives in the Matakana Hills, surrounded by native wildlife and lush bushland. It’s the kind of place that fuels her imagination and breathes life into the stories she loves to tell. Her most cherished roles are those of mother and nana.

Lost in the Wild–A Dogs' Tale
Inspired by a true story, Lost in the Wild tells the gripping tale of two small dogs lost deep in New Zealand's rugged native bush. They encounter feral goats, a boar, and a possum–the "baddies" of the forest–and must face their fears, relying on instinct for their survival.
As their family searches desperately, the dogs become separated, and their paths take different turns. Will they find their way home?
In this tale of survival and resilience, the reader is taken on a journey through Aotearoa / New Zealand's unique forest, and learns of the threats to our native species.

Jin's Great Escape
This is the true story of a feisty little otter who escaped from Auckland Zoo.
For several weeks, New Zealand was gripped by otter fever as Jin was spotted in the suburbs, on beaches, and on islands in the Hauraki Gulf.
The mischievous little otter made world news and captured the hearts of a nation.
Jin's Great Escape is her tale.
