First for Thirst
Gilberd and Company started out as a small factory in a rented shed on a horse-stables lot in Napier in 1871 under the short lived partnership between James Gilberd and Alfred Budd. From the mid-1870s the Sweetapple family joined the company, first taking a 50 per cent share and later taking full control of the company. In three generations the family had helped transform Gilberd's from a small shed-based operation to one of New Zealands's biggest and longest running soft drink firms. The factory closed in 1986 after 115 years.
First for Thirst covers al aspects of the factory's history. From the early occupations of its founders and newspaper reports on visits to the factory, to the company's floats entered into the Hastings Blossom Parade and the art deco features of the third factory building, which is still standing. It also features an expensive catalogue of the 154 bottles used by Gilberd's known at the time of printing.
