    Melinda writes picture books, short stories and novels for children and teenagers. While wrangling three teenage children, a cat and a dog, Melinda also runs a business with her husband and writes whenever possible. Her short stories have appeared in the School Journal and the Australian School Magazine, and several trade anthologies. Her first novel for children, Jack the Viking (Scholastic, 2008) was written while on the NZSA mentor programme. Melinda's second picture book The Were-Nana (Scholastic, 2008) was awarded Children's Choice at the 2009 NZ Post Children's Book Awards, and was a Sakura Medal finalist. Her most recent publications include picture books While You Are Sleeping (Duck Creek Press, 2013) and The Song of Kauri (Scholastic, 2014) and the Junior Fiction Finalist and 2014 LIANZA Librarians Choice winner, A Winter's Day in 1939 (Scholastic, 2013). Melinda has also twice been short listed for the Joy Cowley Award (2003 and 2006), was the 2014 University of Otago College of Education Creative New Zealand Children's Writer in Residence and was awarded a 2015 University of Otago Wallace Residency at the Pah Homestead.
