Michael Gould
Michael Gould is a writer, film theorist and poet. In 2021 the New Zealand Society of Authors awarded him a mentorship as an "emerging writer" (though he had already published Surrealism and the Cinema: Open-eyed Screening, one of the first books in English on this topic, in 1976). He completed the mentorship with David Eggleton, New Zealand poet laureate. His poetry has appeared in publications, both popular and academic, in Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, the UK, the USA and Canada. His first poetry collection, Perverse Verse, was released in March 2026; and is already getting some notice.

Surrealism and the Cinema: Open-eyed Screening (Revised)
"Surrealism and the Cinema: Open-eyed Screening" (1976), one of the first English language books on this topic, was an iconoclastic work with its insightful readings of the films of Bunuel, Hitchcock, von Sternberg and Samuel Fuller and references to paintings and comic book art. It broke from academic conventions with its use of emotion and humour and found a place in film courses, libraries and on the book shelves of film lovers and art students world wide. Extensively revised as an e-book. (2011). www.michaelgould.co.nz

Perverse Verse
Perverse Verse, short poems, previously published and new. Humorous (often black) yet reflective. Poetry from someone outside the mainstream of contemporary poetry. It will appeal to the hip general and literate reader and lover of wordplay. Released in March 2026; distributed by Expensive Hobby (Auckland).
