Mike Scanlan is a Master Mariner who learned the arts of navigation and seamanship from years of navigating many of the world’s great passenger and cruise liners around the world.  Then, for more than thirty years as a lecturer at The New Zealand Maritime School, he taught and examined professional masters and mates, becoming particularly involved in the teaching, examining and administration of pleasure boating and yacht master classes; an interest he has maintained since teaching the first of these classes to be introduced into New Zealand in the 1960s.  He has served as a Director with the Royal New Zealand Coastguard’s Boating Education Service and was a long-serving member of the Small Boat Safety Committee, earning him numerous awards and commendations for his services to boat safety education.
