There was a garden in Nuremberg, A Novel
Publisher: Amsterdam Publishers
Available in paperback, hardcover and e-book from September 6, 2022
The Nazis have taken charge and life changes for everyone. Germany’s Jews live in the grip of icy fear. Members of the wealthy Nuremberg congregation must decide where their future lies. As a member of the board, a decorated WWI veteran and a lawyer with a thriving practice, Walter Mannheim is deeply rooted in Germany, whereas his wife Sonia is desperate to extricate their two children from the hate-riddled atmosphere of Hitler’s favourite city.
Within the city, power flows between Julius Streicher, the half-mad Nazi District Commander, and ruthless Dr. Benno Martin who runs the Police Commission and is reputed to be Himmler’s man in Nuremberg. He is also an old war-time comrade of Walter Mannheim.
Describing the effect of relentless persecution on the Mannheim family’s daily life, the novel portrays the deep sense of loss that accompanies their flight.
