Robyn Yuwell was born in New Zealand in 1971. She was educated at Victoria University and became a teacher working in New Zealand, Japan, and Bali. She has published a smattering of articles and poetry in various magazines including Jakarta Post and NZ Poetry Anthology between having children, working full time, and running Kubu Arts Space with Yudane. This is her first novel. She recorded and wrote this novel throughout a year of being incapacitated by chemotherapy in an effort to alleviate boredom and entertain.
‘Sonic Dissonance’ begins by tracing Yudane’s influences from family, culture, history, martial arts, music genres, art forms, composer networks, and intense, loyal friendships – friendships that are closely bound like family. What she hoped to convey in this book is just how active the vast creative networks throughout Southeast Asia and the world are and how one creative project leads to another, fostering deep intercultural learning and the creation of new possibilities.
