Ryan Smith

Ryan Smith is a scriptwriter and writer of fiction, as well as a composer and sound designer.

Most of the writing Ryan has done up until now has been for radio, and as a freelance contributor has written 11 radio features for RNZ. These include the four-part series Music and Dreams, on composers who have lifted music out of their dreams; Moondog: The Viking of Sixth Avenue, about the blind New York street musician; and The Sonic World of Horror on the use of music and sound in horror films. Ryan also contributes music articles to the AudioCulture website.

In 2016 Ryan was a grateful recipient of the NZSA Mentorship Programme, and learned a huge amount about the craft of writing being mentored by Jo Randerson.

In 2017 he co-wrote the narration for the SOUNZ Contemporary Award video which was screened at that year's Silver Scroll Awards ceremony.

He was both dramaturg and composer for the award-winning theatre production Traces: Ghosts From The Archives, based on 19th century ghost stories from New Zealand. And he is also a trained audio describer who has written and performed audio description for the Arts Access Awards, and two short films (Access for All, Arts Access Aotearoa; Relaxed Music, Chamber Music New Zealand).
