Writing has always fit in the bones. What I write tends to gravitate toward the emotional literary fiction zone. I like to go deep and true, some have said raw, but I reckon I have combatted enough shame to do so with compassion. Common themes I've noticed emerging in my works are the seriousness of youth and how it affects us long term, disenfranchised grief and the harm of silence, and the formation of identity. There's always hope in what I write.
Writing craft is a major love. I love a good puzzle. While believing I wouldn't be able to write prose well enough for, say, a novel, I spent big chunks of my early twenties dedicated to learning how to write screenplays technically well. I figured out structure through that screenwriting avenue, as well as other functions like cutting for efficiency, and getting in and out of a scene quickly. I still enjoy writing screenplays, but I have since found trust in my ability to write prose and spend more time with longer word and page counts. I've been workshopping since getting my first Diploma in Creative Writing in 2010, when I was twenty. I've just completed a second Diploma in Arts (Creative Writing) at 35. My writing voice has consistently been noted, even in the beginner years, and I'm proud of how it has grown.
