We’re celebrating 35 years of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori!
On the 1st of August, 1987, the Māori Language Act came into force making te reo Māori an official language in its own country. The Māori Language Commission was established as a result of this Act.
The first action at the first board meeting, was to replace this name with a Māori one. At this meeting, it was decided the name would be: Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori – the rope that binds the language. The new name and logo was agreed to by the end of the meeting, and a karakia shared and the decision was ratified.
