1001 Nights…in Auckland
Join students from Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate, Otahuhu College and Manurewa High School, at the 2017 Auckland Writers Festival, to hear unique versions of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, set in the students’ own South Auckland neighbourhoods and lives, and featuring music by Siosaia Folau (@theblackfriarsnz).
The 1001 Nights Writing Project is the brain child of writer and university teacher, Paula Morris, in partnership with Auckland Writers Festival, with support from the Auckland Diversity Fund, and with administrative assistance from NZ Book Council.
These stories—as good literature does—provide an insight into personality, culture and life. Teachers (Rachel O’Connor, Di Starrenburg and Ruby Porter) report an increase in students’ writing and social confidence, improved writing skills, and wonderful camaraderie between students sharing this common interest. Morris will select stories for end-2017 publication on the 1001 Nights Writing Project website, with students receiving their first writing paycheck for that honour.
