Auckland Comic Shop Heroes for Sale to Host Free Comic Book Day with Local Artist memoh.

New Zealand’s premiere comic book store Heroes for Sale is hosting Free Comic Book Day at their Symonds Street location, expanding their focus to local creators amid Diamond transition.

AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND, APRIL 22, 2025 – Founded on the idea that “for every person, there is a comic they will love,” Free Comic Book Day (a.k.a. FCBD) is one of the largest promotional events in the comic book industry. Every first Saturday of May, major publishers (including Marvel Comics, IDW Publishing, and more) gather together to give away free comics to encourage both first-time readers and long-time comic book fans to flock to their local independent comic book shop, creating a much beloved cultural and community activity. This 3 May 2025, Heroes For Sale will host FCBD from 10am to 5pm at 205 Symonds Street.

Historically run by Diamond Comic Distributors, Diamond has assured the public that the 2025 event is proceeding as planned despite their recent Chapter 11 filing. However, the uncertainty has many comic shops worldwide wondering about how the event will continue in coming years. In response, Auckland comic book store Heroes for Sale has taken the opportunity to broaden the scope to include local independent talent. On 3 May, along with discounted FCBD titles supplied by Diamond, an ashcan of Kiwi comiker memoh.’s debut graphic novel Dominion, Vol. 1 will be available for free to comic shop patrons. The writer and artist herself will also be attending and signing ashcans and A3 posters.

Sue Colson, co-owner of Heroes for Sale, had this to say about the event: “At Heroes for Sale, we’ve proudly been part of Aotearoa’s comic scene for over 30 years, and supporting events like Free Comic Book Day is one of the ways we give back to the community that’s supported us all this time. We’re passionate about sharing the joy of comics, whether that’s through introducing new readers to the medium or championing local talent like memoh., who’ll be signing in store on the day. Celebrating creativity, connection, and the power of storytelling is what we’re all about—and we’re stoked to be part of a thriving and diverse comics community here in New Zealand.”

Dominion, memoh.’s debut series, is a YA fantasy-romance comic about a city guard and a vigilante arsonist investigating a case of apocalyptic proportions. Releasing 21 May 2025 as a full-colour paperback manga thanks to funding from Creative NZ, this volume is also printed in partnership with historic Kiwi comics printer Beyond the Ledge Press based in Christchurch.

A single issue preview of Dominion, Vol. 1 will be available for free with any purchase on the day (while stocks last). Other titles with FCBD issues will be offered at $1.50 each. Dominion, Vol. 1 will also be available to preorder in store from Heroes for Sale the day of the event.
