Leaving the Red Zone

Canterbury Poets Bounce Back

People talked about quake brain, but the Canterbury earthquakes, despite or because of this, generated amazing bursts of creativity: music, dance, astonishing street art, and poetry.

Five years on, the anniversary of the devastating quake of February 22nd is marked by the publication of Leaving the Red Zone – poems from the Canterbury earthquakes, an anthology of poetry written by poets from across New Zealand and edited by James Norcliffe, former poetry editor for The Press, and Joanna Preston, poetry editor for Takah? magazine.

One hundred and sixty-eight poems cover the whole range of the experience. Here are sorrow, resignation, defiance, stoicism, humour black and wry, and everything in between.
