NZSA Auckland Branch is proud to bring you the Literary Lounge Series this June and July.  At the ‘Doctors Who Write’ event Dr Sharad Paul and Dr Art Nahill will discuss the ups and downs of writing as a doctor.  The event will be chaired by Dr Renee Liang.

Sharad P. Paul is a skin cancer academic, family physician, evolutionary biologist, storyteller, social entrepreneur and an adjunct professor at Auckland University of Technology. Born in England, with a childhood in India, he is a global citizen who lives Down Under. In 2008, he was featured in international editions of TIME (“Open Heart Surgeon”). A noted polymath, he was named “Renaissance Man” by the New Zealand Herald and was awarded the Medical Association’s highest award – awarded only to one doctor at a time. In 2015 he received the Ko Awatea International Excellence Award for “Leading Health Improvement on a Global Scale, and his work towards patient-centered medicine across several countries.” He is considered the only person ever to have authored works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and medical textbooks. He recently was a “distinguished speaker” at the Museum of Natural Sciences, USA and also was a speaker at the Jaipur Literary Festival, the world’s largest, in sessions alongside Germaine Greer, Jeffrey Archer, Yann Martel and Sir Venki Ramakrishana. His latest works are The Genetics of Health (non-fiction published by Simon and Schuster) and The Kite Flyers (Literary fiction, published by Harper Collins).

Art Nahill is an adult physician at Auckland Hospital. Originally from the US, Art moved to NZ with his kiwi wife and children in 2005. In addition to teaching and clinical practice, Art co-produces and hosts a medical education podcast on medical reasoning and diagnostic error. He has published poetry in both hemispheres including Poetry, Harvard Review, Poetry NZ, and Landfall among others and his second collection entitled Murmurations was published last year.
