Members’ Sound Excerpts
The South Auckland Research Centre collects material from across a large multicultural area. South Auckland has a rich and deep history. Sharon Smith, research Librarian at the SARC curated, from the Footprints Collection, the exhibition Peace, prayer, and reflection in South Auckland; portraits of people & buildings connected with spiritual life and worship in South Auckland. She will speak about the research centre, the types of resources held, how to access them and she’ll summarise the oral history collection.
Tuia Te Ao M?rama – oral history of M?ori mental health nurses – had its beginnings at a 2010 conference. One of the objectives of the project was to develop a resource that would ensure the history, knowledge and experiences of M?ori mental health nurses who practised between 1950 and 1990, is preserved for future generations. Tio Sewell and Hineroa Hakiaha will present an outline of the project from the its beginnings through training, equipment, recording (the value of insider interviewers); use of the material: film, audio and writing, through to the website and beyond. Lily Lee, educator and author, worked in the Ministry of Education for 16 years. Agent of change, she was among leaders who brought Marae and Tikanga Maori into mainstream secondary schools. Interviewed in two oral history projects, she has been on both sides of the microphone. Co-author of Sons of the Soil, Chinese Market Gardeners in New Zealand, Lily is currently writing about the lives of Zhongshan people who live in Aotearoa/NZ. She’ll speak about the book and how she uses oral recordings in her work.
Members’ Sound Excerpts: Please bring short sound clips on a USB stick from your own interviews. It’s enriching for us, and rewarding for you, to have an audience, and to receive feedback. Also, the exhibition From Guangdong to Aotearoa; photographs, sound clips and written excerpts originating from oral histories, is touring Auckland Libraries. It can be viewed at the Manukau City Library till April 24th
