Our Annual Short Story Competition ?

?The Top of the South branch of New Zealand Society of Authors (NZSA) organises an annual Short Story Competition. Previously the sole sponsor has been Page & Blackmore Booksellers of Nelson. As from 2019, the competition will be jointly sponsored by Page & Blackmore and the Top of the South NZSA branch, with prizes awarded in the form of both book vouchers and cash. The total prize fund is being substantially increased to $1000. In another innovation, we will be accepting entries via email, as well as traditional hard copy. Although not a condition of entry, we strongly recommend that writers use this standard short story template

This national competition is judged by a different, noted New Zealand writer each year. 
The judge for 2019 is Alan Carter

?Alan Carter is an award-winning crime author and sometimes television documentary director. His Cato Kwong series – Prime Cut, Getting Warmer, Bad Seed and Heaven Sent – has been published in the UK, France, Germany and Spain. Prime Cut won the Ned Kelly Award for Best First Fiction in 2011. His first novel set in New Zealand, Marlborough Man, won the 2018 Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel and was shortlisted for the Ned Kelly Award for Best Crime Novel 2018 and will be published in Germany in 2019. He is published by Fremantle Press.
Past judges are Catherine Chidgey, Kevin Ireland, Tina Shaw, Ted Dawe, Graeme Lay, Brigid Lowry, Gavin Bishop, Carl Nixon, David Hill, Fiona Kidman and Owen Marshall.??
The 2019 competition will close on 1st April. The first, second and third placed writers will receive prizes of book vouchers and cash. They, and the seven shortlisted writers, will receive certificates recognising their achievement. The results will be announced at the AGM of the Top of the South branch, NZSA, on Saturday 11 May, and published on this website.
