The 2016 Hawke’s Bay Shorts Competition

Hawke’s Bay Shorts are providing an opportunity for local writers and artists to explore their creativity, with $4500 available in prizes to be won, it’s time to start writing and illustrating.

Short Story Competition

Enter to win the short story category with a top prize of $1000.00 and automatic inclusion in our forthcoming Anthology. The two runners up will receive prizes of $250.00 each. This section will be judged by International novelist Charity Norman.

Poetry Competition

Enter to win the poetry category with a top prize of $1000.00 and automatic inclusion in our forthcoming Anthology. The two runners up will receive prizes of $250.00 each. This section will be judged by well known local Poet, Emily Dobson. All prize winning stories and poems will be published by the Napier & Hastings Mail.

Art Competition

Visual Artists! This exciting part of the competition means the Artist of the winning work will not only receive $1000.00, but your artwork will be featured on the cover of HB Shorts’ Anthology, due for release 2017, two runner up prizes of $250.00 are also available.

Your entry form must be submitted no later than September 1st 2016 and your artwork delivered to Creative Arts Napier (CAN) for display by October 13th and the judges are YOU – our HB Community as this section is a ‘people’s choice’ vote.

ENTRY CHECKLIST

You may enter as many times as you like, but each entry must be accompanied by the correct fee and an of?cial entry form (published in the Napier & Hastings Mail, available from Beattie & Forbes, The Can, local libraries and HB Shorts Facebook Page).

ALL SECTIONS

WRITING SECTION:

  • I have written a ?ctional short story (not a memoir, a description or a story for children) and/or a poem

  • My story is less than 3000 words

  • My poem is less than 40 lines

  • My written entry is clearly printed and double spaced in a 12 pt font

  • My name does not appear anywhere on the entry

  • This is my own original, unpublished writing

    ART SECTION

  • I have created an artwork suitable for public display/ Anthology cover

  • I understand, as the winner of this section that my artwork is retained in perpetuity by HB Shorts or the section sponsor and will not be returned to me

  • This is my own, original artwork that I will supply for display at the CAN by October 13th 2016

All ?nalists and our amazing sponsors will be invited to a prize giving ceremony on Thursday 27th October, where winners will be named and prizes presented.
