Entries open now for the NZ Booklovers Awards 2023.

‘We are thrilled to be offering the NZ Booklovers Awards for a fifth year, to recognise the talented authors we have in New Zealand,’ says Karen McMillan. ‘We are delighted to announce a new award for 2023, The Junior Fiction Children’s Book Award, to join our Adult Fiction, Lifestyle and Children’s Picture Book Categories. We welcome traditionally published authors and self-published authors to submit their books throughout the year.’

NZ Booklovers Award for Best Lifestyle Book 2023, sponsored by Benefitz
Cooking, wine, architecture, lifestyle, home and garden, design, fashion – all the non-fiction books that have the ability to enrich our daily lives.

NZ Booklovers Award for Best Junior Fiction Book 2023, sponsored by The Kiwi Kids’ Bookstore
The best of children’s fiction for 7 to 12 year olds that is child-friendly and encourages even the most of reluctant of readers to develop a love of reading.

NZ Booklovers Award for Best Children’s Picture Book 2023, sponsored by Duckling Publishing
We are looking for the best children’s picture book that helps engage young readers and foster a love of books.

Prize: $500 for each category to the winning author.
Shortlist announced 16 February 2023, winners announced 30 March 2023.

Criteria:

  • NZ citizens or permanent residents, and New Zealanders living overseas, are eligible in each category.

  • Books published between 1 January and 31 December 2022 are eligible.

  • Entries can be entered by the publisher or author, or for self-published authors with book distribution in NZ, by the author, their book distributor or book publicist.

  • Three books should be sent to NZ Booklovers, 22/4 Stables Lane, Silverdale, Auckland 0932.

  • There is an administration fee of $30.

  • All entries need to be sent to NZ Booklovers by 20 December 2022, and we encourage books to be sent to us in the month of publication, if possible, through the year.

Judges 2023

The Best Adult Fiction Book Award is judged by author, reviewer and judge of the Ngaio Marsh Awards Stephanie Jones, publishing professional Rachel White, and NZ Booklovers Director and author Karen McMillan.

The Best Lifestyle Book Award is judged by journalist and author Andrea Molloy, former magazine editor and lifestyle journalist Peta Stavelli, and publisher, home renovator and foodie Iain McKenzie.

The Best Junior Fiction Children’s Book Award and the Best Children’s Picture Book Award is judged by author and creative writing teacher Paddy Richardson, writer and former editor Heidi North, and early childhood kaiako and journalist Rebekah Lyell.
