Attached below is a year’s sampler of work by the graduating Masters of Creative Writing cohort (2022–23).

There are 12 writers: one poet, one essayist, one story writer and nine novelists.

The group includes Anna Woods, winner of this year’s Sargeson Story Prize, and Rachel Paris, who won the Phoenix Prize for best creative portfolio.

Attached is this year’s sampler of work by the graduating MCW cohort (2022–23). There are 12 writers: one poet, one essayist, one story writer and nine novelists.

Rachel and Anna are two of the seven writers in the cohort awarded first-class honours for their creative work. The others are two of the Māori novelists in that cohort, Katie Newton and Candice Tutauha, as well as essayist Michelle Mearns, commercial fiction writer Sarah Shortt, and poet Yvette Thomas, who won last year’s Caselberg Trust International Poetry Prize.
