Writer’s residence in French Polynesia

Calling writers from Oceania – two months immersion in literary creation in the fenua. Time and resources in support of a writer from the Pacific.

The Publishers’ Association of Tahiti and its islands, AETI (Association des éditeurs de Tahiti et des îles), has been working for 20 years to develop reading and the book trade in French Polynesia and the wider Pacific, through the creation of a number of projects, events, book fairs and festivals designed to reach a wide public.

A new development in this sector is being launched through this offer of encouragement and support for
authors. The difficulties and constraints encountered by members of the writing profession mean that this investment in literary creation is much needed, in particular in French Polynesia and the Pacific.

Officially launched in 2021, the project aims to host two writers in a residency in French Polynesia: one from French Polynesia and one from the wider Pacific region. As a result of health constraints in 2021, the residency of the Pacific writer had to be postponed until 2022.

Application close on 1 June 2022

Titaua Peu was the French Polynesian resident in 2021: she was able to spend one month in the Gambiers and one month on the island of Tahaa, working on her project.

Given that health restrictions appear to be loosening up between Pacific countries, the Association is pleased to launch the call for applications for the Pacific writers’ residence, which will run from September to December 2022.

Any published author from the Pacific region (Cook Islands, Tonga, Samoa, Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, etc…) who has a writing project in French, English, or an Indigenous language, is invited to apply by the deadline of 1 June 2022, to benefit from a 2 month writers’ residence in French Polynesia.
