New Australia Cultural Policy REVIVE includes new WRITERS AUSTRALIA body to invest in literature

Revive: $286 million National Cultural Policy revealed

“Four new bodies focused on the autonomy of First Nations arts and culture, the development of contemporary music and the literary sector, and workplace safety in the arts sector, will be established as part of the Federal Government’s new National Cultural Policy.

To be known as ‘Revive’, the policy is designed to correct the ‘calculated neglect’ of the previous decade, according to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who launched the cultural plan in Melbourne this morning (Monday 30 January).

‘Revive puts the arts back where they are meant to be – at the heart of our national life,’ Albanese said.

‘It is literally through the arts that we build our identity as a nation and a people,’ he added.” (via ArtsHub Australia)

Writers Australia to deliver PMLAs, establish poet laureate

“The federal government has announced further detail about Writers Australia, the literature funding body to be established as part of the government’s new Revive policy, which has been broadly welcomed by publishing and writing bodies.

Writers Australia is one of four new bodies to be created under the new Creative Australia body as part of the policy. The government announced yesterday that Writers Australia would begin operating from 2025 and would invest in the literature sector, providing direct support for writers and publishers to grow local and international audiences for Australian books. It will also establish a poet laureate for Australia and deliver the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards, which will be delivered by Creative Australia in the meantime.

Australian Publishers Association (APA) CEO Michael Gordon-Smith said the establishment of Writers Australia is ‘the most significant development in national literary policy since the formation of the Literature Board in 1975’.
