Huia Publishers, based in Aotearoa New Zealand, is the 2024 Oceania winner of the Bologna Prize (BOP) for the Best Children’s Publisher of the Year.
The Māori-owned independent publisher has been operating since 1991, with a mission to ‘share stories that resonate with our people, that reflect our experiences and that value our culture and language’. The publisher was last shortlisted for the prize in 2022.
New Zealand’s leading indigenous publishers have been recognised for their excellence on the world stage at this year’s Bologna Children’s Book Fair. Huia Publishers have won the Bologna Prize for the Best Children’s Publishers of the Year, Oceania, at Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy – one of the biggest and most competitive book markets in the world, where publishers and agents scout for, and sell, rights to books. - Africa: Yanbow Al Kitab (Morocco)
- Asia: Poplar Publishing Co. (Japan)
- Caribbean, Central and South America: Cataplum Libros (Colombia)
- Europe: Mosquito Books Barcelona (Spain)
- North America: Greystone Kids (Canada)
- Oceania: Huia Publishers (Aotearoa New Zealand).
The awards are presented in six geographic regions to publishers that are ‘at the forefront of innovation in their activity for the creative nature of the editorial choices they have made during the previous year’.
Other nominated publishers in the Oceania region included Affirm Press, Fremantle Press, Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing and Scholastic New Zealand.
