Matariki is rising, signalling the beginning of te tau hou Māori. Matariki is a time to reflect on the year that has passed, to come together and collectively celebrate our successes as a community. We are thrilled to launch our first ever Matariki series: Pukapuka Māori o te tau!
The MLT put out the call to kaituhi, publishers and the wider literary sector to collect the titles of as many Māori books published since the rise of Matariki in 2023. We have gathered these pukapuka here in this series, to acknowledge the immense amount of mahi that goes into bringing a book to life. Even in today’s modern world, the journey to publish a book can be laced with a variety of challenges, especially as kaituhui Māori. The 67 titles presented in this series show the vitality and diversity of the landscape of Māori Literature, from the pā harakeke, spanning across the diaspora. Ahakoa ngā piki me ngā heke, kaituhi Māori brought these pukapuka into te ao Mārama — this is something worth celebrating!
